Differentials: Why is it Important to your Car?
What exactly are differentials, and what does it accomplish? Most folks are unfamiliar with the concept. A differential is a gear train with three components that enable each of the driven wheels to rotate at different speeds. This is required while turning since the inner wheels travel a shorter distance than the outer ones. Your car would just be able to make right turns if there was no differential!
The differential is linked to the driveshaft, which runs down the center of the vehicle and connects to the wheels via a series of axle shafts. Each axle shaft leads to one driven wheel. The input shaft is in the center of the differential, which comprises two bevel gears housed inside a housing with an output shaft in the middle.
The input shaft connects the driveshaft to two bevel gears that rotate at the same speed. Even though they are mounted on a spider gear carrier, each gear has its own speed which makes turning smoother. Without Differentials, driving would not be safe!
Have you ever wondered how your vehicle’s transmission turns smoothly? You now know! Differentials are important for safe driving and allow vehicles to make turns without difficulty. Take a few minutes to consider all of the different components that work together to keep your car in good working order when you’re on the road next time. There are many intricate systems at play, from the engine to the differential.
