What is it?
Maintenance needs and safety requirements for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are similar to those of conventional vehicles, while all-electric vehicles (EVs) require less maintenance. HEVs, PHEVs, and EVs have high-voltage electrical systems that typically range from 100 to 600 volts. Their battery packs are encased in sealed shells and meet testing standards that subject batteries to conditions such as overcharge, vibration, extreme temperatures, short circuit, humidity, fire, collision, and water immersion. A shop that can perform electric vehicle maintenance is a shop that has the skills and tools available to access and maintain any of the highly advanced systems you vehicle may use.
What does it do?
Similarly to a gasoline vehicle, hybrid vehicles still have an internal combustion engine which requires the same amount of frequency of service as any other vehicles. What is different, however, is that the electrical system which includes the the battery, motor, and electronics typically requires minimal scheduled maintenance. Like any vehicle though, the parts and systems in an electric vehicle that get you from point a to be will require maintenance eventually.
Typical Wear and Tear
Electric vehicles require less maintenance that conventional vehicles because:
- The battery, motor, and associated electronics require little to no regular maintenance
- There are fewer fluids, such as engine oil, that require regular maintenance
- Brake wear is significantly reduced due to regenerative braking
- There are far fewer moving parts relative to a conventional gasoline engine
