Engine Air Filter: Should I replace it Now?
If you notice that your car’s engine is running rougher than usual or the fuel efficiency has decreased, it may be time to replace the air filter. These are just a few of the signs that indicate it is time for a replacement. The air filter’s purpose is to keep icky particles from going into the engine, where it would cause unnecessary wear and make the oil dirty.
Many fuel-injected cars have a pleated paper filter in the form of a flat panel. Usually, this filter is inside a plastic box that’s connected to the throttle body with ductwork. Older vehicles that use carburetors or throttle body fuel injection generally have a cylindrical air filter between 100 and 400 millimeters in diameter.
This is generally placed above or beside the carburetor or throttle body, often in a metal or plastic container with ducting to provide cool and/or warm intake air, and secured with a metal or plastic lid. The air cleaner (including filter and housing) is made up of the entire unit.
Always replace your car’s air filter every 12 months or after driving 12,000 miles.
